A Simple Device for the On-Site Photodegradation of Pesticide Mixes Remnants to Avoid Environmental Point Pollution

The worldwide increase in the number and use of agrochemicals impacts nearby soil freshwater ecosystems. Beyond excess applications dosages, inadequate management remnants rinsing water containers application equipment worsen this problem, creating point sources pollution. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) such as photocatalytic photo-oxidation have been successfully applied degrading organic pollutants. We developed a simple prototype to be used at farms for quickly pesticides solutions by exploiting UV–H2O2-mediated AOP. As representative compounds, we selected insecticide imidacloprid, herbicide terbuthylazine, fungicide azoxystrobin, all their commercial formulation. device efficiency was investigated through disappearance parent molecule degree mineralization. toxicity pesticide solutions, before during treatment, assessed Vibrio fischeri Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata inhibition assays. results obtained demonstrated cost-effective, viable alternative detoxifying disposal into environment, even though or photoproducts, showed different sensitivities physicochemical degradation. bioassays revealed changes inhibitory effects on organisms agreement with analytical data.
